As Westchester, Dutchess, and Putnam County clean up in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, we’ve been taking many calls to support those efforts.  Considering the necessity of restoring your home to its former condition, we’ve compiled some information we know you’ll find helpful prior to calling us:

•  Assess any damage to the house.  Take a walk around the outside of your home and carefully note problem areas.  Do you see any pools of standing water with potential to mold the vinyl?  Is moss or debris sticking to your home in unreachable areas? Depending on your proximity to the Hudson River, did the water cover your walkways with grass or mud?Being able to identify trouble spots to protect before the winter comes will be a key part of the process, particularly if you’re in the process of selling your home.
•  Assess any damage to the deck.  Hurricane Rita was anything but kind to wooden decks and patios in the tri-state area.   Local news reported extensive residential damage in the three counties, and we could only wonder how decks were surviving.Not well.  We found that many people ignored proper deck maintenance and left themselves unprotected.  Some of the wood became warped after being bombarded by the elements.  Take a look at the deck and determine whether you need a sealing and staining immediately.
• Clear away larger debris from home and deck.   Stray branches or up-ended furniture will cause further damage to your home if the wind continues to blow them around.  Be sure to clean up any larger obstructions before a pressure wash or deck staining to ensure the highest quality of home protection.
• Make the call.  With all the clean-up preparations you need to make, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.  We understand. Remember: It’s only temporary!  We’re standing by to help rebuild and restore your home to its former glory.
